AGN070
Audio Gourmet has just hit its third birthday and we are pleased to mark the occasion by releasing an EP by Caught In The Wake Forever. ‘Cadder Falls’ is the follow up to the album ‘Against A Simple
Wooden Cross’ released last year on Hibernate, although there are plenty of differences between the two records.
Whilst ‘Against A Simple Wooden Cross’ documented Fraser McGowan’s struggles, Cadder Falls is a record born out of his subsequent recovery from them – inevitably adopting a different stance to that of its predecessor as optimism and hope begin to return. To start with, Fraser swapped the nylon guitars and plug-in synths for vintage synth hardware including the Waldorf PPG Wav 2.3 and a Roland SH101. Manipulated field recordings, guitar and piano were added to the mix and overall, Fraser strived to use the computer as little as possible. This has resulted in a short collection of layered drones, which serve as reflective meditations.
Cadder Falls was born out of the inspiration gleaned from several walks along the Forth and Clyde Canal to a place called Cadder, which Fraser cites as the first activity he had enjoyed since he began the road to recovery from his illness. There was something about the peace and stillness in the area that captured a zest for life again.
The resulting recordings that make up Cadder Falls are Fraser’s attempts to trace the landscape of the canals and to express the liberation he felt along the way. Fraser also began to enjoy taking photographs along the canal and he chose the cover artwork with the barbed wire referencing the slight abrasive feel to change amongst the gentle sun and landscape of acceptance.
